Hi Jerry,
You won't need to compress the spring in order to remove the
Spring/damper assembly. At full suspension travel, the damper is at full
extension. If you undo the three fixing nuts at the top (on the suspension
tower), the assembly will loosen as it gets pulled downwards a little by the
weight of the suspension.
The conventional spring compressors are very difficult to use on this
assembly due to the close turns of the coil. The TSSC sells a specialised
spring compressor set for this job. It acually fits over either end of the
Damper, using the three fixing studs for location at the top end. There are
two plates, one at each end which are wound together by threaded shafts
running either side of the assembly. Obviously, this type cannot be used
until the assembly is removed from the car.
Yor ball joint separator fits with one end on the end of the threaded
section, the other end closes on the top (flat) end of the ball joint. The
bolt on the separator is tightened until the taper is cracked apart. It's
worth using this tool in combination with patience and WD40. Most ball
joints will come apart easily, but those which are well seized should be
tightened and left for some time (5 minutes) then re-tightened. It will give
eventually, quite possibly in the 5 minute wait! Just repeat the tightening
until it goes!
I hope this answers your questions,
        Cheers
            Bill.
