Troy, it probably was road conditions. The car wasn't running, so getting
it on the tow dolly was a case of rolling it to the dolly (you
can't/shouldn't try backing up a U-Haul dolly) and using a "'come along".
Of course the car would have been impossible to budge if it were in gear, so
I know that it was initially out of gear at that point, and when I got it on
the dolly and strapped down, I checked it again. The only thing I can
figure is that some of the potholes/bumps on the way managed to jar it into
gear, or else caused something inside the car to hit the shift lever.
regardless of what caused the problem, I'm going to make every effort to use
an auto transport if I have to haul the car again, and if I'm stuck and have
to use a dolly, I'm disconnecting the drive shaft.
