I have used STP and more recently "Engine Assembly Grease" I also
spin the engine with the starter (plugs out, of course) until I get
oil pressure. A friend of mine and I tried to prime the oil pump
on an MGB with the starter. We ran down two batteries without
success. Finally we drained the oil, dropped the pan, pulled the
pump, primed it, reinstalled (reverse of the above) and Voila! Oil
pressure right away.

A dry oil pump doesn"t pump very well especially at 100 RPM (or
whatever speed the starter can achieve)
