Well, I've got a couple of questions on camshafts. I'm having the
engine in my
TR6 rebuilt and was talking with the machinist today about the camshaft
that
I sent out to be reground and a couple of questions came up. This was
to
be an S2 regrind of a camshaft that was in reasonably good shape but did
have
some pitting on one lobe..
He took a look at it and asked me for the spec sheet that came back with
it.
There wasn't one - just a short note saying this was an S2 regrind and
to set
the valve lash to .016" and install new lifters with the new camshaft.
This
caused him some concern and he pulled out his records of past regrinds
for
other (US) engine rebuilds and showed me the spec sheets and serial
numbers
that were put on each camshaft.
So the question is whether this is standard practice for the S2 camshaft
when
it is reground? He also commented that the shaft has been heavily
reground,
all the down into the barrel on the opposite sides from most of the
lobes which
also caused him to raise an eyebrow. Well, two eyebrows actually. And
then
he talked about grinding it below the hardened surface.
Also, the place I sent it to, which deals extensively in TR parts and
such,
told me that I won't need to replace the springs with this camshaft.
This
doesn't match the notes in the TR6 competition preparation manual.
Any comments on all of this? I'm feeling a bit uneasy about this
camshaft now
and am trying to decide if it should go into the car.
