When mine disintegrated I cut new backing panels from masonite particle
board and spray mounted foam padding, then cut new vinyl and spay
mounted that. I used Christmas tree fasteners instead of those metal clips
and it has held together wonderfully. The foam dampens the interior door
rattle and hides the impression of the back of the Christmas tree fasteners
(It looks good, but nothing like original). All told it cost me about
$18. to do both doors.
It should work fine and look even better using the original pattern with
the pocket from your existing panel, but be careful about what backing you
decide to use. The masonite I used was thick and not very flexible, it
will last a long time but it is impossible to mount the interior handles
with the pin and plastic cover. (I'm not sure about impossible maybe if
you had a hydraulic lift, a midget contortionist, a modified daisy air
rifle...)
