If your rings are worn badly enough to smoke heavily, you may need to
bore the cylinders, going to oversize pistons.
First, pull the head on the car. You can mic the cylinders, and feel
for a substantial ridge at the top of the piston's travel. If you can
catch a fingernail on that ridge, you will have to cut it out. You can
use a ridge cutter (Auto Zone lets you use their tools for free, I
think), then a hone. Of course, you have to remove the pistons first.
I've never tried pulling the pan on a GT6. I HAVE done it one a
Spitfire and it's not too bad.
In the end, I think you will find it much to your advantage to bite
the bullet and pull the engine. Much easier to work on, and you can
take the block and pistons to a machine shop and they can evaluate the
situtation, remove the ridges or bore the cylinders if necessary.
And while you're at it, you might as well replace the big end
bearings. Well, shoot, if you're going to do that, get new small end
bearings pressed in. And while you're at it, you might as well replace
the main bearings. Check the cam, it probably needs grinding. Check
the crank. Hey, this is turning into real work!!!
This is what happened on my Spit. I have just begun reassembly.
Good luck!
