Guys, 
That paint scheme was used in many other planes (on an individual or
squadron basis).  One of the most renoun of the "other ones" is the "Cat
mouth Grummond Hellcats of the VF-27th aboard the Carrier "Princeton". 
Others I have seen are P51 Mustangs and P38 Lightnings.  I'm sure there
are more.
