The references to galloping horses and ranks of blue, would seem to rule
out Gallipoli or any other part of WWI and place it in the nineteenth
century. The US Civil War is possible, but so is the Crimean War and maybe
even the Napoleonic wars. The use of the name Joe in the lyrics may
indicate a US connection.

For those who have been cut culturally adrift by this discussion, Rolf
Harris is an Australian-born entertainer who went to Britain about forty
years ago and stayed. Consequently a whole generation of Brits think that
he is representative of Australia and a whole generation of Australians
don't even know who he is.
The closest US equivalent, that I can think of, would be Ruby Wax, but she
has ben in the UK only about twenty years.
