Now that the head is off the car, I am curious as to what I can do to get
rid of some of the carbon deposits. I'm not interested in rebuilding/porting
the head yet, there's still plenty of life there, I just want to clean her
up a bit. Are there any products that will help dissolve the carbon? TIA

Will - My first recommendation would be to take the head to a local machine
shop and have it "hot tanked" - you won't believe how nice and clean it will
come out after a 45 minute dunk in the tank. That'll get rid of most
deposits. Second choice is to take a Dremel or other small handheld rotary
device with a wire brush attachment and do a little clean up work, being
careful not to ding the inside of the head. Last choice is to use a diluted
mix of muriatic acid, brush it on, let sit BRIEFLY, then rinse.
