fwiw, the rocker cover on my 79 was red, (only bout 2 square cm worth,
but enough to tell) and i had it blasted and it is now chrysler orange,
which looks real good against the agate blue the block is going to be.

This seems very likely, at least from my observations over the years.
The
1500 was introduced in the U.S. for the 1973 model year. At that time,
the rocker cover was still silver. But sometime several years later, I
believe that red became the "normal" color on the U.S.-spec. motors.
There are also blue rocker covers found on much later cars in the U.S.
(the last couple years of California-spec. engines, perhaps?).
