Sam,
If the cracks are in-between the bonding plates, and are small, maybe 1/4
to 3/8 of an inch and not very deep, then not to worry too much. If
however they are because the rubber is separating from the bonding plates,
then this is a little more serious, and if the full length of the plate,
and fairly deep (more than a 3/8 inch), then they warrant replacement.
Check them with the rear of the car on jacks (the rear wheels off the
ground) so that the axles are at the extreme angles and rotate the wheel.
This way you can see the extent of the damage much more clearly as the
joints are stressed in this position. This is not a trivial job, requiring
complete dismantling of the drive axle, and hub assy from the diff mounting
flange out, and re-shimming the hub bearing end play upon re assembly (if
the bearings are replaced, and if you have it this far apart, it's false
economy not to). The new rotoflex joints MUST have a strap around them for
assembly, and MUST not be removed until the joint is installed on the
shafts (or you won't be able to insert the bolts).
