I have a business acquaintance who is a rep for a company that supplies
magnesium castings to automotive and truck manufacturers. More and more
manufacturers are specifying magnesium components (like seat frames and
steering column supports) to reduce the overal weight of the vehicle and
increase the gas mileage. It would seem that a lot of us are driving roman
candles. Maybe the future will find only burnt out hulks of domestic cars
lining the freeways and nothing but steel and fiberboard LBC being driven
carefree on the empty roads. (I wish)
Also used thermite grenades in the army. Mixture of aluminum powder and iron
particles that burned at a very high temperature. It was ignited by a
magnesium flare fuse. Could burn straight through a Soviet PT76 engine block!
Ahhh, memories!
