John, 
If the TR6 engine is the same as the Spit and GT6 in the way the gear
mounts (and I think it is), then yes you can take it back out using some
pliers to grasp the center section and wiggle it sise to side while
pulling and twisting (I think Counterclockwise) to unmesh the gears.

You can then reorient the drive to get the number 1 contact on the
Distributor aligned to where it is supposed to be at TDC.
