Just returned from a top-down 2 hour cruise up to Williamsburg,
its a beautiful day in Virginia! Just to make a few Yankees jealous :-)
I have had an annoying clunk in the rear, noticably when
applying power or after braking. I thought it was u-joints,
replaced two that were bad; I had heard about the differential
mounts, inspected those and renewed the rubber donuts which
were cracking. Still had the clunk.
Fixed it today with two new splined hub extensions. (Set
IgnoranceDisplayMode on now.) I didn't realize that the
splines are supposed to be flat on top, not sharp like the
teeth of a cross-cut saw! Turns out mine were really bad,
and the wheels must have been slapping back and forth
on these splines. There was about 1/16" rotational play, but
none with the new hub extensions. I checked the inside of
the wheels; those splines are flat.
And the dieseling has returned. Can't win all the time...
