Putting too much oil in the H6 will cause some to spill out. I don't
think that's too detrimental to the engine, but you may get smokage if it
drips onto the exhaust manifold.
It's to my understanding that the 1/4 inch rule is only to be used with
Stromberg carbs. The H6 needs to be filled up to within 1/2 inch of the
top of the dashpot (with the plunger taken right out) This is gleaned
from my TR4's glovebox manual, with help from the Haynes manual.
The SU should have a ring inside the dashpot (under the threads), it's
about 1/2 inch from the top. Fill to there. If you put too much in, then
I guess you could pull some out with a clean rag.
It's quite interesting to note that there's a supplement in my glovebox
manual devoted to the SU carb. They tell you to ensure that the level of
oil in the dashpot's correct, but they don't tell you what it should be--
only what the Stromberg should be.
"What, you mean you don't already know????"
