                H E L P !

        I purchased a 1976 Spitfire with a 1500 engine (1974 I believe).
Car did not run, so I rebuilt the engine. I'm restoring the car ( have
restored 2 MG's and expect to do a TR3B after this one). I rebuilt the
carb with a new kit and installed a Grose-Jet (which seems to work
correctly).

I've had it running, idling, up and down the highway, and it now has 500
miles on it. The problem is that I cannot seem to adjust the carb., a
Stromberg 150. It runs fine down the highway, but always idles too rich.

I've reached down through the air valve piston and turned the needle as
lean as possible (ccw), but to no avail. It obviously runs very roughly
when idling. I exchanged the piston from another carb, which the book
says not to do!, and then it won't run at all. (It did once at first,
smelled a lot leaner, but driving about a mile or two it then would not
idle anymore and died.) What are your suggestions to try so that I can
adjust it for the correct mixture.? I have not fiddled with the side
adj. temp. compens. since I was led to believe from the Haynes repair
manual that this is only a fine CO 2 adjustment, and what I need is a
major adjustment, it seems! I've checked compression and get 137 -110
psi, and using Bosch platinum plugs WR8DP, set at .028", using original
Electronic ignition, timing at 10 deg BTDC. Engine speeds up when I
remove the vacuum line from the intake manifold.

Do we have a carb specialist among the crowd who can help me adjust this
puppy?! Oh yes, last time I drove it around it seemed more sluggish than
usual, or was that my imagination? H E L P !

Many thanks.
