Re: the knocking noise.
Check the water pump and pulley interface. I'll definitely second that one.
I thought I had a main bearing knocking, not just worn bearings. The water
pump pulley was worn egg shaped and wobbled back and forth with every
revolution.
Disconnect the fan belt (don't remove it, it's a bear to get out) hang it up
with a coat hanger. Start the engine. Your water pump is disconnected so
don't run it for more than a few minutes, but if the noise goes away, it's
the pump or pulley (or generator).
BTW - if this is the problem, make sure you get the right pulley. There are
two pumps, an OE style (AE brand) and an Asian manufactured one. Each
requires it's own pulley, they do not interchange. I'm not sure how to tell
the difference, but the TRF's tech line (Dave) probably does.
