Patrick,
There are many different gauge wires in a TR6 harness...from 20 to 10 or
8.
I've been down this road with my '74 TR6. I would advise against trying
to build an entire new harness for your car.
I restored the harness for mine. I laid the harness out on the garage
floor
and starting at one extremity, carefully sliced open the protective
wrap.
I left the wrap in tact in areas where the wires exited the main trunk
or
diverged so the harness wouldn't lose it's shape. I then carefully
examined the wiring for burned areas and chaffing. Once I determined
the
gauge and color code of the wires that needed repair, I ordered
replacement
wire and connectors from a company called British Wiring, Inc. I don't
have
their numberhandy but they advertise in the T section in Hemmings Motor
News.
I can dig up the number later if you need it.
After the new wire arrived, I spliced it in where necessary with solder
and
copious amounts of heat shrink tubing to protect the repaired areas. I
then
double wrapped (triple or quad wrapped in areas where the harness was
previously chaffed) the harness in Top grade 3M electrical tape. This
isn't
your 50 cent a roll stuff but the good $7.00 / roll professional tape.
I spent about $40.00 on the harness plus about 6 hours labor. Much
better
than spending $300.00 plus on a new one PLUS I retained the original
color codes for the wires!
