Ah....you've come to the right place to ask this question...I've
just completed this changeover.
Now if I can only remember what I did... :-)
To change out a original '74 three-rail tranny to a later single
rail tranny you need the following *later* parts:
* 20 spline clutch disk <possibly not the pressure plate but I
replaced mine as a matter of course.>
* shorter propeller shaft
* speedo cable
* speedometer <different calibration>
* fiberboard transmission cover <shifter offset 1/2" to offside and
has different shifter gasket>
* floorpan tunnel access cover <you need to cut original floorpan
about 4">
* shift boot sewn in carpet <later is taller>
I'm sure the second I send this message I'll think of three more
things...like the gearbox itself. :-)
For the record my conversion was putting '76 components into an
original '74 1500. Looks like you have a parts car there that will
give you everything you need.
IMHO, the shift action of the later box makes it worth the hassle of
converting...I really like it. Improved durability is still a
question mark for me. The only significant change I see in the
gearbox itself is a larger pocket bearing at the input/mainshaft which
can't hurt, but I wouldn't expect any miracles either. :-)
