Andy,
I really hate contradicting you, but.....Later MKI's had engines with
lower compression ratios (8.5:1 vs the earlier 9.5:1) and were marked
with the "KD" prefix. The first round of emission standards I
believe went into effect in 1968. My 1967 GT6, KC6353L, has the
9.5:1 comp engine, earlier style throttle linkage, no vaccuum retard
mechanism or switch, single cable choke, and an engine marked with
"KC". My 1968 GT6, KC11856LO, has the 8.5:1 comp engine, different
style throttle linkage, vaccuum retard mechanism and switch, dual
cable choke, and an engine marked with "KD". The spare MKI engine
gathering dust in the corner of the garage is stamped with "KD".
Also, the '68 GT6 I built into a 'Spit-6' had the smog-control setup
and the "KD" prefixed engine. All of these engines have the earlier
style narrow head. As it is not possible to bolt the MKII full width
head to a MKI block (I've tried) I assume it is not possible to bolt
the MKII head to a MKI block.

KD is the prefix for "smog-controlled" Mk.2 (+) engines. Perhaps an
earlier head was bolted to a later block? Engine numbers often are
within a
few hundred of the commission number.
