If my EGR was broken, it came that way from the factory or it was a
defectivie part. I removed the EGR in 1975.

Your EGR was broken. EGR helps mileage when it works, by
filling the combustion chamber with inert exhaust instead
of fuel-air when power is not needed. (deceleration,
cruise, etc).
