Jason,

I've never personally converted a generator model Spitfire to an
alternator. It should not be difficult at all.

I would recommend finding a later Spit and cannabilizing the mounting
hardware and even the alternator if possible. If you want, you can find
an alterternator off a mid '70s Ford Festiva, which has a higer output
(65 vs. 35 amps), and uses the same Lucar connector--at least on the
units I've seen.

TRF sells a conversion kit (part # CYB 400, about $6) which is the basic
three connector plug used in later Lucas alternators (or just take off
doner car). The three wires are: 1: A 10 gauge brown wire that connects
to the battery connection at the starter solenoid-the main charging line,
2) A 16 gauge brown wire that's crimped into the always-hot brown wire
circuit of the harness, and 3) A brown/yellow 18 gauge wire the goes to
one of the terminals of the "IGN" warning light in the speedo (the other
terminal is a white wire that comes off the switched hot leads of the
harness).

Since the Lucas (and Festiva) alternators have an internal regulator, no
external regulator is needed.

That's the basic overview. If you want or need more info, I'll try to get
you through it, i.e. checking and matching connections from either of my
cars.

Charlie B.
