I remember as a pit crewmember of GP and FP Spitfires in the 70's that
the rear axles and hubs were rather a weak point and there were race
suppliers, such as "Mother" Meuller (Lee Meuller) that had machined the
rear hubs to accept heavier axles and uprated bearings (that didn't rely
on the axle as the inner race). Rumor was that the axle shaft was from
a Chrysler Valiant. It also used a larger U-joint. No self respecting
racer then would use the original Triumph rear axles. A similar story
may exist for the E-types of G44.
I doubt they used anything other than BL transmissions or Diff's,
however. There was a rumour that the gear lube was Red Line synthetic
(when it became available) instead of Quaker State however...
One of the other complaints was about the XJS they raced with a standard
transmission, since all the XJS's were automatics!
