are you absolutely sure its the gasket that's leaking ?  typically its one of
the shaft oil seals causing the problem, usually the front one, and the drip
will cling to the diff body and drip down at the gasket. 

i replaced my front oil seal with the diff on the car.  i'm reasonably sure
that whichever job you end up doing - you can do it under the vehicle - it
takes longer, but when your under there alone sometimes its the only way.

i'd recommend that you don't leave the diff hanging on any of the mounting
bolts.  disconnect the drive shaft, loosen all the mounting bolts, and use a
short 2x4 to support the diff.   the bolts shouldn't be subjected to the
stress.
