I have a 72 Spitfire with a switch just above the windshield wiper switch
(the one that pumps fluid when pushed). It has a knob that looks like a
little speedometer icon. It has 4 terminals, but nothing connected to it
and no loose wires in the vicinity. What was this for?

Joe my friend, what you are looking at is the switch that controls the
instrument panel lights. My early Spit (1964) has the same set up. You
need to have the headlilghts (or parking lights) turned on for it to work
(and the wires hooked up - duh!). If your speedo/tach/gauges light up at
night already then it sounds like the DPO re-wired them directly to the
headlight switch.
