Is this the plate welded to the chassis beneath the steering rack, or
the one rivetted to the left side of the bulkhead? The two plates never
(in my experience) carry the same number, though they are usually in the
same series. In the case of Heralds, I have seen several chassis' under
UK spec cars (ie., GA XXXXXX DL etc) with the chassis plate under the
rack having a completely different number in the GB XXXXXX series (no
suffix). The number recorded for registration purposes and on the
factory build records is always the plate rivetted on the body. I would
suggest that as your chassis is numbered in the Spitfire Mk1/2 series,
but with a number beyond the end of production of these types, that a
generic frame numbering series was continued into later Spitfire/GT6
series, long after the change in the Commission Number proper. I have
never dismantled a Spitfire or GT6 to know if this is correct, can
anyone else shed any light?
