Roger-

The best way to arrive at the correct pushrod length unfortunately involves
a bit of trial and error. You'll need a good dial indicator. Measure the
total lift at the cam side of the engine and divide in half. At one half of
the total lift, the relationship between the pushrod, rocker and valve
should form 90 degree angles. That is, the rocker should be parallel to the
head at half lift. This geometry should reduce the "angular" loading of the
valve on the guide, to the minimum (least amount of guide wear). Then grind
a parting bit of the correct width, and cut the pushrods. Do not actually
remove the pushrod end from the tube, but use the tool just under the edge
of the tip. As you cut through the pushrod tube you will be able to easily
see when to stop cutting as the dark color of the inserted tip will become
apparent behind the light colored virgin metal you are removing. Now just
knock the tip home into the tube and install it. Once the car is running,
check the valve clearances a few times to be sure that all the tips have
fully seated in the tubes.
Clear as mud huh...
