Wire Wheel Spline Question

To All,

While asking about the practicality of getting used wire wheels, someone 
made mention of the splines gettig old and allowing the rims to move(?) 
freely on them.  I am gathering that there should be no free of the rims 
on the splines and that the knockoff nuts should snug securely down?  
Other than them rolling "true" anything else to look for?  Thanks again
