John - when I replaced the diff outer pinion seal on my 64 Spit. I had the
same problem you did - figuring out how to get the old seal out. I ended up
using a big old screwdriver and hammer and gradually over an hour's time
beat the sucker out (and into about 20 pieces I might add). Caveat - be
careful that you do not score or gouge the mating surface for the seal.
After it came out I cleaned up the surface of mine with a little fine emory
paper and then some 600 grit paper. The new seal fit fine and doesn't leak
so I presume all is well. Good luck.
