Sounds like the characteristic noises of the beginnings of timing chain
problems. In your case they chains may have stretched slightly while the
tensioners may not be moving, and not taking up the slack. This may be a
result of the rebuild and the tensioners not being properly installed or
"triggered"(sprung) during the rebuild.
Yes the oil pan can be removed with the engine in the car but it is a
lot of work!!!. Look at the shop manual, I think the exhaust system has
to be removed(front pipes) and crossmember has to be either lowered or
removed and that may be with the steering rack but I'm not positive.
Is the sound a knock or tap?? I would let the car sit over night and
then have some one crank it while you listen with the bonnet open to
hear where the sound is coming from. If you can pin point the source of
the noise it will help to diagnose the problem.
