I had a similar sounding problem in my spit a few years ago, and it turned
out to be a case of air in the clutch hydraulics.  Putting the clutch to
the floor didn't provide enough pressure to keep the clutch plates apart!

Definately try toping up the reservoir and bleeding the clutch system  
before yanking out the tranny!
