Sounds to me like the Alternator has a noisy bearing...
Over here on this side of the salty puddle we just take the ACR alternator
down to our local 'Halfords' motor factors and exchange it for one off the
shelf ,costs about 34 GBP,repeat every 3 years or 36,000 miles whichever
comes first.
So far as I know,it's usually the diode pack which blows,as indicated by
glowing red ignition light kindly provided by messrs Triumph, and if you are
have lots of 'spare time' whatever that is? and can locate diode packs
etc,then yes you can DIY.
I refer you to Practical Classics magazine,September 1996 issue
no.10,pgs.104-107,
this excellent article gives 'how-to' info for rebuilding alternators.
prices for parts:slip-ring 1.60 GBP, brush-set 0.90 GBP, bearing 1.75 GBP,
diode pack/rectifier 7.00 GBP, regulator 4.70 GBP.
Parts for alternators may be obtained from Auto Electrical Services
(Peterborough)Ltd,tel:00-44-1733-62645 (from USA).
or Magnum Associates,Stockport,tel:00-44-161-4870-1844 (from USA)
I expect you have similar electrical parts dealers in the USA.
Best of Luck
