Well besides the obvious scoring or wear on the sides that ride in the bore,
look for ANY pitting or wear on the face of the tappet (the part that
contacts the cam lobe). If there is ANY pitting or wear and I mean even one
pit or scratch replace. If in doubt - replace. You should also check to
see if the face is flat. Contrary to what many believe, they are not flat
but have a slight crown, around .002-.003 of an inch. If flat replace. You
can check flatness by holding on tappet (or lifter) at a right angle against
another tappet and look for light gaps that should be present aroung the
edge. If you are replacing the cam with a new one, don't EVEN consider
using the old tappets. Replace them all with new ones, and remember to
ALWAYS replace the tappet frm th same bore from which it was removed. It's
false economy to think otherwise, as it's much more expensive to replace
both the cam and lifters AGAIN if done incorrectly - or worn parts are used
and they take cam with them when they go!
