The swap is fairly straight forward and already covered in previous posts
with one exception. The overdrive mount from the 1500 will not bolt to the
72 frame. The bolt hole pattern was changed from a wide, roughly 3 1/2 inch
spacing to around 1 1/2 inch spacing. and moved slightly farther back
(towards the rear) of the frame. You will either have to re-drill the frame
(if you can) for the new mounting position or make a O/D mount for the
existing frame mounting holes (what I did on the GT6). There was a
transition mount used on 71-72's with the J type O/D but only for the three
rail and the single rail is slightly longer. The reason I say, if you can,
is I believe the frame is slightly different in this area in that later
frames have a longer flattened flange in the tranny area to accomodate the
new mounting location. You'll find out when you try to bolt it up. This
will probably detirmine which choices you have.
