>I'm getting ready to redo the brakes on my 74 Spitfire. In the brake kit

>What are they referring to as the "pad backing plate?" Is this the metal

>the anti squeal shims eg both the side facing the caliper and the side
>facing the pads? I get a little nervous when applying grease to brake areas.
The order is thusly:
1. Brake pad (material)
2. Brake pad (metal, aka backing plate)
3. Shim (that little chrome looking sheet metal thing that disapears often)
4. Piston in caliper
Grease or silcone (calk) between the piston and the backing plate can sometimes
reduce
squeal. Although that's what that shim plate is supposed to be doing. Often
times, it
doesn't work. As long as you aren't gloping on vast quantities of grease, and
are
carefull to keep it away from the rotor and pad surfaces, you'll be fine.
However, my
own experience with brake squeal has left me believing that rust is the only
sure cure.
