If you leave an invariably 'steel' plug in say a front vertical link,once it
has been removed/replaced a few times by people of varying mechanical
dis-ability,there is the danger that the head can snap off,(don't ask how I
know),then you must strip down the entire unit to take it away and try to
remove the broken off piece without damaging the vulnerable thread in your
expensive vertical link,or you can instead use a grease nipple to stop the
EP90 Oil from escaping from your front trunnion.,even if the nipple should
break off,and I've not yet seen one do that,the part remaining in the
vertical link,or whatever,is hollow up the middle,and hence easy to remove
without damage.
By the way,EP oil refers to Extreme Pressure and must always be used instead
of grease,this is because if you look inside a phosphor-bronze stanpart front
trunnion,you will see that it has a special thread-this is a version of an
archimedes screw,and is designed,by the rising/falling of the front
suspension,to pump the oil around the threads of the front vertical link,thus
ensuring adequate lubrication.
Grease will work for a time,but soon dries out,so if you like the thought of
your TReasured TRiumph taking a nose dive into the tarmac,go ahead and use
grease!
