This was an Ohio Fiat 850, so the floors were rusted away. There were
holes large enough to lose your shoes through, and of course the seat on
the passenger side had rusted free of the floor. This made for quite an
acrobatic maneuver, of necessity, for the passenger; keep feet up against
front bulkhead; hold dash to prevent falling backward/forward; and do that
one-handed, since the other hand was needed to hold the door closed -- did
I mention that it would pop open whenever the body flexed too much ? Since
my friend and I were both in the over-200-lbs category, it flexed a lot !
LBC content: The reason I was bumming a ride in this Fiat ( which later
caught fire during some winter starting drill, ether-assisted, ISTR, and
thus was unfortunately lost to potential restorers ) was that I had recently
sold my '69 Spitfire, this was in the fall of '75, and parking at Ohio State
was such a headache that I gave up and was a bicycle rider for the remainder
of the school year. (The Spit was no prize by that time, BTW - no exhaust,
popped out of 3rd gear often, bald tires, etc.--but the 1296 ran great !)
