Eddy,

I have indexed plugs before, but have never used more than two washers. 
My philosophy was to get the electrodes as close as reasonably possible. 
You may be hurting your performance more than you help by lifting the
plugs up with that many washers.  

Are you using compression washers? They do allow a little more
flexibility in exactly where the electrodes end up, as you can go a
little tighter or looser to make the electrode fall in the right place.  

I never did any serious testing; dynamometer etc.  but my standard "close
enough" was within about a 30 degree range around the optimum point.  

At the risk of opening up another wildly ranging discussion I will add
that for the past several years I have been using Bosch Platinum plugs in
all my vehicles.  I think it makes them go a little faster than a good
wash and wax; but not as fast as if you vacuum out the interior also.
