Just to clarify:

1. I only drive the car in summer (or rather I don't drive in winter, we
have four seasons here :-). Is there any advantage to using the engine
oil instead of gear oil? Does engine oil contain any additives which
could potentially be harmful to transmissions? Why would they recommend
engine oil only for the O/D equipped ones?

2. I have not been using 20w50 engine oil in the trans before, but then
my car has sat for 8 years. I drained the oil from the trans yesterday
and I believe it smells like gear oil so that's what was in there
before. (Perhaps the philosophy has changed since I last drove the car,
at least where I live). Does anyone else's mechanic(s) recommend engine
oil in the trans (or advise strongly against it)???

3. As far as the diff goes, is the Castrol Hypoy C 80w90 GL5 a good
move? The car is a 76 so I'm not sure if it absolutely requires the GL4.
I'm under the impression (perhaps incorrectly) that GL5 is not always
the way to go even though it is newer than GL4. Something about GL4 not
being as harsh on bronze (or brass???) parts in the diff. Can anyone
elaborate on this?
