Joe,
I've had Apple rebuild three sets of carbs for me over the years. Two sets
of H6's for TR3's, and a set of CD175's for our TR4. One set of SU's worked
perfectly, the other set leaked around the fuel bowls (tightened banjo bolt,
leak went away), ran rich (reset float height), and had cleaning refuse in
one float bowl (cleaned out). Once corrected, they worked fine. Both TR3s
have been sold, but the CD175's are still working fine on our TR4. The CD175
have non-original suction chamber top attachment screws, but besides that,
look fine.
Given the time, I'd always choose to rebuild my own carbs just to have
personal quality control. Apple was used since I did not have time. Apple's
response was prompt - carbs were back within 10 days. At the time I used
Apple total carb set rebuilds were under US$250 and I used discount coupons
I received at car shows to drop the price further . The price of rebuilding
has increased so much in the last few years that I'd think twice, about
sending them out for rebuild but then again I've never been squeamish in
tackling anything mechanically.
