You guessed it correctly! The shift rod cup lined up correctly, the reverse
was higher than the other two. Although there was not a square-sided cup as
shown in the manuals. There was a ramp about 30 degrees from verticle. I
compared it with a friend's '4A...almost no difference. The rod lengths
(phew!) were almost identical. Then we looked at the springs. Mine had a
very soft spring similar to what is used in the doors! Not even half the
strength it should have been. Thank God for friends with lots of spares. I
now have the right spring. It still shifts into reverse easier than it
probably should, but it can never again be mistaken for 4th. Thanks for
