No need at all to cut into it. Get some bullet wire ends and some of those
four-wire rubber-covered connectors to match the other connectors on the
car. It would be as safe as any other method of tapping in, and it
should be totally reversible if need be.
As I recall from your descriptions over the years, though, you lost your
chance of winning a bonnet-closed national Concours at least two Webers
and several buffing wheels ago! ;-)
