You could go to your local auto parts supplier and get a "Heli-Coil" kit,
which consists of a drill bit, a special-sized tap, an installation tool, and
a few helical thread inserts which look like coil springs. Follow the
instructions on the kit, and you'll soon have new stainless steel threads in
those holes, actually stronger than the originals. Kits are REALLY expensive
-- probably about $25.00 at a discount store like Pep Boys, etc. They've
been the same price for decades...
One caution -- check how much material is around the holes before embarking
on this project. The thread inserts add significantly to the major diameter
of the threads, and if your holes are near the outer wall, you may tap right
through the side.
