At first I thougt 'Damn, main bearings, crank, timing chain, etc', but
then I thougt maybe water pump. Had no leaks but decided to remove the
fan belt and see if the noise went away. And it DID! So I ordered a new
pump and two weeks later, today, I put it in. Guess what??? NO FIX!!!
Still had the noise.
So, I'm back to thinking main bearing as I figured it only makes the
noise with the pressure of the fan belt on it. Sound like an idea???

Goodnight from France
Bob,
Sorry, I'm sure you did it, but.. Did you checked that big nut on the front
crankshaft pulley ?
This nut has the strongest tightening torque of the whole car (20,7 kgf.m, 150
lbf.ft).
It never loosens by itself, but.. I remember that we found on the grass the nut
of a 1500 Spitfire, at a meeting of our club. Every bonnets have been openned,
to found the MK3 Spitfire of our previous president/founder of the club without
his big nut !
Annual meeting of the Amicale Spitfire next week in Alsace, place of the
Gewurstraminer and other great white wines.. Any interested ?
