I recently discovered some excessive play in one of the rear wheels on my 75
TR6. I removed the hub and drive shaft assembly and found the following:
1) Excessive end float, but otherwise smooth operation
2) It appears that the hub has been replaced recently
I figured that I'd better get into the bearings to check their condition
before simply adjusting the end float via the adjusting nut. Well, not
having tool "M86C" I constructed what I thought was a pretty stout pulling
device....but no luck.
Ok, now I'm thinking perhaps I should just try adjusting the end float and
hope that the bearings are in good shape. After all, everything feels
smooth, just a little sloppy. So, I loosen up the adjusting nut and start
to proceed to adjust it down to the recommeded .002 inch float. Problem is,
the adjusting nut seats up against the stoneguard and nothing will budge.
In looking at the cut-away diagram, it appears as if the collapsible spacer
is not collapsing as it should. Or, perhaps the DPO (or his mechanic) put
the pieces in incorrectly, keeping it from compressing properly.
Anyone have any experiences with this or any ideas about what could be
causing this problem? My next step is to either build a better puller, or
find someone who has one so I can get it apart and see what's going on.
Until then, any ideas are welcome.
