TR4 seat springs (1963)

Sorry for this dorky question, but I need to know if the seat springs were
painted and if so, what shade of black.  My car is very original and all that
was left of the paint (if any) on the seat springs was the original rust.
 That is gone, but before I resurface the seats I would like to get the
springs ship-shape.
