Greetings,
I'm new to this group, having just found it, and have been reading the
mail here for a week or so and thought I'd introduce myself and ask for
some advise. First, I've been attracted to Triumphs since I was a kid.
I can remember TR3 advertisements, or perhaps they were video clips of
the car as a prize, on the "Truth or Consequences" show back in the
early 60's. I bought my first one upon graduation (I'm an EE too) in
'76, a new TR7 (ACL 020823U) which I used as a daily runner till '81
when it was retired for more reliable transport (That's another story).
In '93 I eventually got around to getting another, this time my first
TR6 (CF37807U) a '75 with 116K miles it. It's a mongrel as it has a '72
engine, having been replaced by a previous owner, but it's almost 100%
intact and restorable otherwise. I don't want a show car. I want a
daily runner again.
Anyway, here's what I'm about to do and could use some advice. I
swapped the head after my purchase with a rebuilt unit from TRF. That
was 1600 miles ago. It's slowed down the oil consumption, plugs
have stopped fouling and it straightened out the compression a tad (120
per, +/- 5 across the set). Visually, the cylinders looked OK, no top
ridge but I didn't go any deeper and was hoping the bottom would last a
while longer. It hasn't. Shortly thereafter some folks stated that my
oil pressure was too low, <20 lbs at idle with SAE50 and the oil
consumption continues. So I was thinking that it's about time to tackle
the bottom end before we spin a main. I'm about to pull the
engine/transmission and am wondering:
1. Any particular advice wrt the engine at this point other than crank
end thrust play?
2. Any suggestions wrt the cam? and timing it upon reassembly?
3. I'll check the clutch upon disassembly. Any suggestions wrt
prefered components (Laycock, Borg, etc.)?
4. The syncro on second is almost gone and the box sounds like a
washing machine at idle in neutral with the clutch out. I've never
tackled a transmission before but believe this is a good time to set it
right. While I've been known to suscribe to the theory that if it's
broke, I can't hurt it, I'm not comfortable yet at tackling this one and
wonder if it'd be best to send it out. I've got Bentley's manual and it
refers to some special tools which I don't have. The proceedure seems
straight forward enough but I wonder, is it? Any advice here would be
really appreciated.
Any guidance on the above, or any other related comments, encouragement
for that matter would be gratefully appreciated. Hope to be able to
contribute to others here too soon. Thanks in advance,
Gary Klein
