Good guess. There should be a flap of material at the rear of the top, under
the window. The plate should fit snugly into the fold this forms. Center it
carefully! If you don't the top will always be lopsided.
Then pop (or imex) rivet the snaps on. Use stainless snaps and rivets, or
they'll rust when it rains. Then glue rubber washers the the underside so the
rivet tails don't scratch your paint. I don't know if the rubber washers are
original, but they're a darn good idea!
The webbing should have already been installed, of course.
This is how I did my top last spring.
