Actually, assuming the same 1:1 fourth gear ratio, you want the wider
ratio for the engine with less peak torque. This way, first is 11.458:1
rather
than 8.666:1, giving more effective torque at the wheels, making it easier
for the engine to get the mass of the car moving.
