Uni-Syn for beginners?

There has been a thread about the relative merits of uni-syn and colourtune
recently...

I don't know what either of them do...or even what they are (if there is a
difference).

Can anybody spare a few minutes to jot down a brief summary of the
features/uses/cost of each and/or similar devices.
